Joe MaddonThe MLB playoffs have been flying over these first two days. We’ve already seen fantastic pitching performances, timely hitting, and a pair of American League managers given the boot on justifiable arguments with umpires. Tampa’s Joe Maddon and Minnesota’s Ron Gardenhire took early showers on Thursday and had to watch from the clubhouse as their respective teams fell behind 0-2 in their ALDS against Texas and New York. Maddon and Gardenhire will have an extra day each to cool off, as the American League takes a break while the National League takes center stage on Friday.

Guillaume LatendresseThe NHL season does not start with the first drop of the puck; it starts with the first puck in the net. Minnesota’s Guillaume Latendresse had the honors of kicking off 2010 when he netted a wrist shot over Carolina’s Cam Ward at 3:33 of the first period in their game in Helsinki, Finland. Although the goal came in a 4-3 losing effort, it served as official notice that the talk is over; hockey is back.

Barry BondsIf you’re curious about how much the baseball schedule has changed over the years, just take a look at the history of October 5. At one point in time, playing in the cold month of October was reserved only for the lengthiest of seasons. Now, thanks largely due to a growth in the playoff format, we’ve actually seen baseball extend right through the month and even stretch into November.

Marvin MillerPerhaps one of the most important men in MLB history to never wear a uniform was Marvin Miller. He was the Executive Director of the MLB Players Association from 1966 to 1982 and was largely responsible for it becoming the strong union it is today; probably the strongest one of all the major North American sports. The benefits that MLB players are entitled to now exist largely because of what Miller did during his time as head of the MLBPA.

Matt CappsNo Nathan? No problem. The Minnesota Twins thought they might have a problem when it was discovered before the season began that closer Joe Nathan needed Tommy John Surgery and was going to miss the entire year. The Twins record holder for saves in a single season was gone, and the organization was going to need a replacement quick if they wanted to keep stable one of the most solid bullpens in the game and return to the postseason.

Carl PavanoThe American League playoff teams are hardly proving their worth. All of the Yankees, Rays, Rangers and Twins have limped their way through the final week of the season. Not a single team has played as good as their record suggests they are, and in some cases, considerably worse. Some of them have rested their better players since clinching a playoff berth, but we’ve barely seen glimpses of competitive baseball from any of them.

Darcy TuckerDarcy Tucker won’t be playing in the NHL this year; or ever again. After a 15-year career with Montreal, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Colorado, Tucker has announced his retirement after a summer of shopping himself around that ultimately ended without him finding a city willing to pay the money he felt he deserved. In a league where many teams are looking for young talents or fighting salary cap issues, Tucker is an odd man out.

Rafael SorianoScott Boras has signed another one. He inked Rays closer Rafael Soriano to a deal and will represent him as his contract with Tampa Bay comes to a close and he begins to search for a new; and significantly higher-paying deal. As one of the top closers in baseball this year, holding his own with the likes of Mariano Rivera, Jonathan Papelbon and Heath Bell, Soriano will demand top dollars from whatever team he winds up with.

Chone FigginsWhat the heck happened to Chone Figgins this year? After leaving the Angels last season and becoming one of the most sought after free agents and opted to sign with the then-hopeful Seattle Mariners, Figgins ended up playing second base for the worst team in baseball. After winning a World Series in 2002 and being an All-Star in 2009, things have really turned around for the 32-year-old Georgian. Now he’s mulling around a struggling team and playing some of the worst baseball in his career.

Miguel CabreraMiguel Cabrera’s season came to an early end when he was scratched from Wednesday’s game with a sprained ankle. That freezes his 2010 statistics where they are at 150 games played, 38 home runs, 126 RBI, a .328 average, a 1.042 on-base plus slugging percentage, 111 runs scored and 180 hits. His stats have him right in the middle of the conversation about who will be this year’s American League Most Valuable Player, but one fact hurts him more than the rest.
